Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion
Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion is spine surgery procedure that is used to treat a herniated disc in the neck when all non-surgical methods of treatment fail. During anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, all or part of the herniated disc in your neck is removed. It is removed from the front of your neck to decrease risk to the spinal cord and nerves. After removal of the disc, the space is stabilized by inserting a bone graft in between the vertebrae where the disc used to be.
Benefits of Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion
You’ll be relieved of the arm and neck pain you’re experiencing due to the herniated disc in your neck or degenerative disc disease. The herniated disc irritates spinal nerves that have roots in the spinal cord near the disc. By removing the herniated disc, the pressure put on the nerve is released and the pain will be relieved.
About Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion Surgery
Dr. Rovner will begin the surgery by making a small incision in the front of the neck. The windpipe, as well as arteries, muscles, etc., are then moved aside, providing access to the herniated disc. The disc is removed and the bone graft is inserted in its place. Then, to further increase stability, a titanium plate is screwed to the affected vertebrae surrounding the bone graft. This will allow more complete healing and a quicker return to the daily activities you enjoy.
What to Expect
At Progressive Spine & Orthopaedics in New Jersey, we use state-of-the-art minimally invasive techniques and procedures. This enables you to go home the same day or just one day after the procedure and quickly return to your normal life. It is recommended that you avoid bending or twisting your neck excessively while your spine heals. The healing takes about four to six weeks but you should feel some relief from your arm and neck pain almost immediately. This all depends on how long you were experiencing your symptoms and how irritated your spinal nerves were by the herniated disc.
You will have some neck pain in the first week or two after the surgery but this should improve daily as you heal and will be treated with pain medication. You may experience some difficulty swallowing for two to five days due to displacement of the esophagus during the surgery.
Most of our patients say that the long-term benefits of the procedure far outweigh any temporary discomfort.
Of course, you’ll receive more detailed and specific instructions for your recovery from Dr. Rovner after the procedure. He’ll be happy to answer any and all questions you have. You’ll be scheduled for post-surgery appointments to verify that your recovery is going as expected.
Dr. Rovner will be active and a part of all aspects of your care – from your first consultation, through choosing your treatment plan together, all the way to your recovery.
